Taiwanese ChipMOS Technologies recently announced its plan to expand capacity in six fabs across Taiwan for NT$12.5 billion (US$419.5 million; US$1=NT$29.8), the Commercial Daily reported on July 15. The investment will be allocated for the expansion of clean rooms in factories located in Tainan and Hsinchu, the establishment of new smart and automated production lines, and the advancement of IT testing and packaging technologies for the fabrication of memory ICs, driver ICs, and mixed signal chips. This will facilitate the company to explore new business opportunities in 5G and automotive industries while rivaling South Korean peers in the DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) market. A part of the investment will be allocated for solar energy facilities. Taiwanese semiconductor shipment value is estimated to reach NT$4.37 trillion (US$146.6 million) in 2022, NT$219 billion (US$7.3 million) of which will be contributed by the memory IC industry, according to MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute).
